in lovely Prairie Village, Kansas, [SLD's home town].
First, she stopped to admire the pioneer statue in one of the city's small parks: " - SLD

" Next: Another city park that still shows the marks of the route of Santa Fe trail
that started about 100 miles east of Kansas City,
and ran almost 1,000 miles to Santa Fe. New Mexico. " - SLD


The text in the photo reads:

" Over 100 years ago, the gentle grassy depression in front of you was
one of the most important highways in North America. Here, you'd
see wagon trains on the Sante Fe Trail winding through a rolling
landscape covered with this, waist-high prairie grasses.

Imagine thousands of trade wagons rumbling and creaking back and
forth between missouri and New Mexico. Wagons -- and the hooves
of the oxen and mules that pulled them -- wore this road into the
earth. By the 1940s, emigrants bound for the Oregon and California
Trails wore it even deeper.
